Ah, a new request, and isn't it marvelous, the way they continue to roll in?
"Dear Mrs. Guide,
Would you please add an African American artist to the artist profiles? I don't see any.
Thank you,
Ashleigh"
Thank
you, Ashleigh - good eye, for there weren't any. Since you've left me to my own devices (always a potential "like it or lump it" results crap shoot), I've written a biographical profile of Jacob Lawrence. It seemed like a good place to start, because he was such a pioneer in telling stories of African Americans, with or without words. We've got two of his books for younger readers at our house, so we're all confirmed fans of Jacob Lawrence's work. Besides his bold, colorful, wonderful paintings, I've also always liked the way he respected his mama - all women, really - and wasn't afraid to marry a beautiful, strong, talented artist (and stay married to her for nearly 60 years). As time goes by, Ashleigh, you
may begin to notice that you don't run into polite, secure male artists nearly often enough in Art History. Please forgive my personal preferences creeping in here, but it did feel good to give Jacob Lawrence some small nod for being such a gentleman - as well as for being an important painter. Appreciate the heads-up, dear, and thanks for writing.
