Where are all the famous women artists?

Sunday September 19, 2004
Teresa Kelly, who is a kind, caring museum docent, wrote a while back with a concern of hers. Young women are always asking why they don't see more female artists in art museums, and Teresa wondered what a good response would be. To be honest, so did I. The historical dearth of recognition for female artists has always gotten my back up. It bugs me that a woman artist can be insanely talented, but we'll all still wonder who she's dating and when she'll have children.

However, you have to be careful not to lay any heavy burdens on inquisitive young minds. So, I researched, and tried to come up with official statistics and studies and all that. Something that sounded good and explained things in clinical language. And it looked OK, but ... in the end I chucked it and just wrote from the heart. An open letter to my younger sisters. Hope it helps somebody, somewhere.
