Artists You Should Know: Hundertwasser
Thursday August 12, 2004
You've two treats in store, this week. First is, of course, our featured artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. His spectral colors and composition remind me of his fellow Austrians, Klimt and Schiele (whom he admired), and his overall "feel" brings to mind Cecil Collins. Talk about a feast for the eyes!I came to really like Hundertwasser, the Person, while writing this. He wasn't a stranger to scandal, controversy or speaking his mind (imagine being so sure of one's convictions that nude protest was an option) - about darn near anything. I also admire that he cared not a bit for classifications, and would likely have snorted in derision over my profile attempt.
Now, the second treat is that Amy Robertson, artist and quiltmaker, suggested Hundertwasser. As she sent her business card, I (the incurably nosey one) looked her up online and was floored by her quilts. No kidding - it was like seeing a quilt for the first time in my life. They are absolutely gorgeous. You'll see at once why she likes Hundertwasser; her palette is similarly vibrant. Hope you'll pay her site a visit, and Amy: thank you so much on both counts!
