Artists You Should Know: Christo

Wednesday August 4, 2004
Yes, Christo: the environmental artist best known for wrapping or surrounding large objects along the lines of, say, an island. He and his wife/artistic partner, Jeanne-Claude, have got New York City's Central Park slated for their next outdoor scene. In February of 2005, The Gates will be (temporarily) installed and we will see "7,500 saffron-colored gates placed at twelve-foot intervals throughout twenty-three miles of pedestrian walkways lacing Central Park from 59th Street to 110th Street and from Central Park West to Fifth Avenue." Whether this art appeals or not, no one can accuse Christo or Jeanne-Claude of lacking vision on a grand scale!

Thanks for this suggestion go to Debbie Gibney, a real, live Art History professor. If her email is indicative (lots of great suggestions!), she brings great knowledge and enthusiasm to some lucky students. It's always a treat to meet educators that are truly passionate about educating. Thanks, Debbie!
