10 Favorite Mothers in Art
Monday May 3, 2004
Mother's Day is just around the corner. (I know this for a fact, as I have been keeping track of the date and dropping none-too-subtle hints around our house.) Jone Johnson Lewis, About's Guide to Women's History, has put together an amazing Mother's Day Special, covering everything from the history of the celebration to menu ideas and crafts. If you need ideas or information to help celebrate your mother (and, speaking as a mother, being celebrated doesn't happen nearly as often as it should!), please check out Jone's exhaustive resource.
As for me, I put together a list of some of my favorite moms from art, complete with links to their images. All are subject to change, dependent on mood, except for the illustrations from The Runaway Bunny. Those of you who have, like me, memorized Goodnight Moon by heart, must know that it would have been included, too, but for the references to "the quiet old lady." "Beautifully ageless and young-at-heart" would have worked great for me, "lady" perhaps (I have my moments), but "quiet" never, and "old" is quite simply annoying.
