Artists You Should Know: Everett Shinn

Sunday May 2, 2004
Jean Daniels suggested that "anyone from the Ashcan School" should be featured, and since only Everett Shinn has gotten a write-up, to date, here he is. Shinn intrigues me. As the youngest member of The Eight, he seemed to care less about exposing gritty urban life than the possibilities the dim lighting of back streets and alleys offered his compositions. (Which isn't a fault; not everyone is born to crusade for social reform.) Just as soon as he got a name for himself as a serious painter, he moved on to try new things like writing, acting and film directing. Whenever he needed money, he'd illustrate something for a newspaper or magazine. It's tempting to want to throw the acronym ADD in here right about now, but I (1) didn't know him, (2) am not qualified to diagnose these things and (3) prefer the term "multi-faceted", in any case. Thanks Jean!

By the way, this profile is maddeningly behind schedule due to a protracted battle with that horrid new "Sasser" worm. If you need to know how to protect yourself from it - and, trust me, you DO want to guard against this - check out "Sasser Internet worm on the loose" at About Antivirus Software.
