Art History 101: The High Northern Renaissance
Saturday April 3, 2004
In one of those strange twists of fate, the High Renaissance of the North coincided almost exactly with the same event in Italy. Where Italy had Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, the North had Matthias Grünewald and (most importantly) Albrecht Dürer. In fact, I go on a bit, in this new article, over Dürer, and how the Northern Renaissance wouldn't have been nearly the same without his contributions. (We should all rejoice that the guy knew how to churn out those prints of his!) Coincidentally, both High Renaissances were short-lived (though each ended for different reasons), but really, really spectacular while they lasted.
