Dave Barry on Pretentious Art Words

Tuesday January 20, 2004
Let me admit right up front that I find the columnist Dave Barry hysterically funny. He's the only man on earth, besides my Beloved, who can make me aspirate coffee. If this admission should cause me to be labeled as having plebeian taste, bring it on.

Anyhow, two days of no Internet (due to a nasty snow blower vs. phone cable incident) found me in an Official Bad Mood until Dave showed up. His Sunday column entitled "Clearly not for faint of art" had me howling. Not because its subject, "Chair", is or isn't art. That's purely subjective. The column was about the way it ("Chair") was written up, and Dave thoughtfully provided a link to the full description (which really made me howl). Maybe I'm just too obsessed with the mundane (you know: paying bills, feeding the family three times/day, etc.) to get my head straight and be Super Serious About Art, but I always react the same way Dave did. People should be allowed to have fun with art, and ask questions (if they suspect the Emperor has no clothes) without being objects of ridicule. In my opinion. Or maybe it's just that plebeian thing.
