Some Seriously "Early" Works

Monday December 29, 2003
Have you heard of the recent find at Hohle Fels cave in the Swabian Jura, southwestern Germany? Three tiny, exquisite sculptures - carbon-dated to around 30,000 years old - are causing quite a stir, according to the Discovery Channel and many other news services. The hubbub is due, first, to these Upper Paleolithic period sculptures being much more sophisticated than was thought possible. Secondly, there's rampant speculation as to who was responsible: Homo sapiens? Neanderthals? Aliens? Someone posted on the Art History Forum about this very thing and added a ton of links for those who are interested. I sort of got confused, reading the post, over the part about Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons having bigger brains and making better artistic choices than we. Logic would then dictate that sperm whales would make the greatest art ever. Still, I'm no scientist - and the links were appreciated!
