What Munch Saw

Thursday December 11, 2003
As far as theories go, this is a really interesting one. The New York Times just ran this article, which goes on at length about the colors of the sky in The Scream. According to the author, an astronomer at Texas State University is convinced that Edvard Munch actually saw those colors in the sky over Oslo. Incidentally, people all over the world saw the exact same colors in the sky...shortly after Krakatoa blew itself to smithereens. In an age without instant news feeds, an inexplicable blood-red sky might tend to freak one out...perhaps to the point of screaming?
