Got to Love Those Thrift Stores
Monday December 8, 2003
One of my Cyber Sisters (let's call her "Beth", since that's her name) is forever finding the greatest bargains on earth at garage sales and thrift stores. Items - the very sight of which would cause heart palpitations - are often just waiting for her to happen by. We Sisters are frequently agog at her luck and/or timing and I, for one, freely admit a wee bit of envy. Well, it's doubtful even Beth can top this: The BBC reports that a Rembrandt etching was plucked out of the "throwaway" bin at a charity shop in England, by a fellow, unknown to us, Sister named Sarah Flynn (who also happens to be a paintings valuer). Yes, the print was pulled after his death, but since Rembrandt etched the plate it's worth a considerable amount of money. If you're not "into" thrift stores, I won't even try to convince you, but this Rembrandt etching is yet another shining example of the beauty and hidden benefits of post-consumer shopping.
