The Triumph of the Fruit Roll-Up Shirt

Sunday November 23, 2003
This news item caught my eye and small wonder: food (especially food that tastes sublime and is presented beautifully) is yet another topic which fires my passion. The Baltimore Sun's online version, SunSpot.net, ran an article about a high school art class and its recent student exhibition. The newsworthy part is that every single work had to be created entirely of edible materials, and all were available for consumption (post-judging). First place, with its Golden Whisk trophy, went to a shirt created of fruit "leathers", and it was amusing to read of van Gogh's Starry Night being recreated in the novel mediums of spaghetti and peanut butter. I don't know the art teacher who came up with this approach but - boy! - is she ever on the right track. This is exactly the sort of fun that should be had with art and art history!
