Dali + Disney = "Destino"

Saturday October 11, 2003
A collaborative animated film, 57 years in the making, will make its US debut next weekend at the 41st New York Film Festival. It seems that the two artists met after WWII. Disney had respect for Salvador Dalí's work, and Dalí considered Walt Disney a fellow Surrealist (he must've seen Fantasia). The project between Dalí and the Disney Studios was quietly scrapped, in a financial move, when it seemed the short film (now winning rave reviews) couldn't possibly be sold. It would be nice to think that the Disney media empire decided to complete the project - which closely follows Dalí's original storyboards - in the spirit of honoring an obligation. It's also reported, however, that the organization finally realized that they didn't legally own around $100 million (US) worth of original Dalís, unless the film got made.

The DVD, about 7 minutes long, is something spectacular. I own the DVD, it was sent to me when I purchased set #3 from PW Galleries. I saw it for the first time at an art auction at sea. I know they get a lot of flack and whatnot, being called Pirates, but it’s not true. My auctioneer, a guy named Matt, was completely honest about the works and I could tell from listening to him how excited he was that he had it on board. I let me know the value of owning such an amazing collaboration of two great icons in art! I can’t wait to increase my collection of already 7 Destinos! I urge everyone to collect.

I purchased set 3 recently. The stuff is brilliant. The problem was finding a room with enough wall space to show them properly.

And, the key to a good investment in Art is to buy something that you love and don’t worry about it. With a quality product, it will always be worth more.

JOEFOG, as one of those boring, altruistic purist-types I could not agree with you more. No one, in my opinion, should buy art because they’re gaging or second-guessing the art market. Buy things you love and can afford. Keep and live with them because they make you happy on a daily basis. Our respective estate beneficiaries can sort it all out and sell/hang onto the stuff after we’re gone. (Not a huge problem to send to future generations, when you put it in perspective. I’d rather fret over environmental issues or trillions of dollars’ worth of national debt … but maybe that’s just me.)
