William Steig, and Bono
Monday October 6, 2003
William Steig, 95, cartoonist for the New Yorker and illustrator of childrens' books, passed away this weekend at his home in Boston. Those of you with children probably know him best as the creator of Shrek. He won the Caldecott Medal for his book Sylvester and the Magic Pebble in 1970, after taking up writing in his sixties. He will be missed.
Unrelated, but worthy of mention as having the best headline in a while, The News Telegraph ran this today: "The artist formally shows his prints". Bono (of U2 fame), it seems, is a painter. The canvases he just created will be used toward a charitable cause; they'll be at auction (Christie's, New York) toward the end of next month. What a lovely excuse to put Bono in the Artist's Index here...someday.
